The Egee community Minecraft server (now modded!) just got a spooky new update that adds some not-so-spooky Create mods alongside a horror-themed graveyard mod. Best of all ~ it also got a much-needed hardware boost!
The server has been humming along for a couple of months now. We've patched the modpack to add new mods a few times along the way, but we reached a ceiling with our old hardware. We’ve been pushing it to its limits without room to grow, and performance has begun to wane majorly. That’s why this update also includes some sneaky (and necessary!) under-the-hood changes.
What's New in Egee's Server Modpack v2.1.1
I figured spooky season would be the perfect time to officially relaunch the server. It's been flying under the radar all this time, but it is alive and well(ish)! We are running Minecraft 1.21.1 on a custom modpack, which you can download here.
This modpack update brings even more Create addons to the mix, namely Aeronautics, Copycats+, Numismatics, and The Factory Must Grow. I also threw in Seasonal Decorations so we’re prepared for Christmas, too!
There are new mobs and structures, too. I added The Graveyard, which introduces cemeteries and potential boss encounters. It shouldn't be overwhelming but if it does get out of hand, it's fully configurable and we can tune it down. Since we already have Alex's Caves expanding our underground biomes, this complements the surface world nicely.
New Hardware
The real sleeper hit of this whole upgrade is the hardware and provider migration. Last year, I moved everything from Linode over to DigitalOcean. It seemed like a solid idea at the time, and the price was right. Unfortunately, their hardware (and pricing tiers) didn't scale well for gaming workloads.
I spent last weekend migrating the server from DigitalOcean to Vultr, putting us on a high-frequency AMD EPYC instead of a crusty old Xeon. On the OS side, I also switched from Ubuntu LTS to openSUSE, paired with custom kernel, system, and JVM tunings.
How To Join
The Egee community Minecraft server is just a regular ole modded Minecraft server. You just need version 1.21.1 and the modpack. Download & open the mrpack with a launcher like Prism Launcher and it will download all the mods for you and bootstrap Minecraft for you.
To connect just go to Multiplayer and enter minecraft.egee.io as the server address!
