A Week of Self-Hosting WordPress

·

I’ve actually been hosting this WordPress site for a little over a month but I only started really working on it last week.

It’s currently in WIP mode as I figure out exactly what it’s going to look like. As it stands right now, it’s pretty dorky looking. 😅

It’s using a pretty common & standard theme called Blog FSE by Blocks-wp. They are known for their theme builder for Elementor. I try my best to avoid themes and plugins so I’m not running anything like that.

I picked the theme because it’s lightweight and doesn’t have any freemium features. An awful lot of WordPress themes bake-in bits of functionality that rely on plugins that you must pay for. It’s a very annoying practice and it’s actively pushed me away from the marketplace.

Egee’s Long View

When I started freelancing, I wrote a business plan that brought me to where I wanted to be assuming I continued freelancing. I didn’t seriously expect to still be here a year later but I’m sure glad I wrote that business plan!

In my last post I talked about migrating from Medium. A great thing about WordPress is I can run my business and blog from the same platform, the same site even! Medium is just a blog and the things you write there stay there and debatably belong to the Medium community.

My goal is to fully self-host Egee.

Egee.io has been my domain since forever and now is the time to begin moving everything I do to it. I do a lot of stuff so it will be a long journey but WordPress is absolutely the platform for me.

A big part of what I do is with audio and video. I need a host provider and YouTube is the biggest player. I could go the distributed route with Peertube but why bother when I could simply self-host here! VideoPress is a JetPack service that isn’t quite self-hosting but it could be an interesting experiment as I figure this all out.

And that’s just it. From the website theme to the plugins, I’m still just figuring all of this out.
